Many years ago my trusty old propane BBQ was stolen while I was in Joshua Tree. I searched for the perfect replacement grill.
Enter the Volcano Grill.
What was I seeking in a grill?
It had to be dual purpose, meaning it could be used as a grill but also a small fire pit. Since I spend a great time in the desert off the grid the requirement is a metal fire ring to have fires outside of improved campsites. After a great deal of research, I came across the Volcano Grills which collapse down for easy transport. In addition, they can also act as an oven, dutch oven cooker, and grill.
After a great deal of research, I came across Volcano Grills which collapse down for easy transport. In addition, they can also act as an oven, dutch oven cooker, and grill. Here is what Volcano Grill has to say about the Volcano Lid.
Our most popular accessory, the Lid has become a must-have! The lid is made of a durable, heat-resistant material and works by trapping and circulating heat in the Volcano. The lids increases efficiency and adds to the versatility of the Volcano. This is the best way to bake or smoke with the Volcano. The Lid is also excellent for Dutch oven cooking, trapping the heat and (in most cases) eliminating any need for adding top briquettes. Easily folds up and fits in your Volcano carrying case.
When I first purchased the Volcano Lid I was concerned it would not hold up to repeated use. After three years of use, it’s a bit dirty but shows no signs of any failure. They are easily replaced on the Volcano Grill website for about $30.00 at the time this post was published. The lid allows you to use a Dutch Oven, smoke, or bake.
You can either use charcoal, which is what I do or convert the Volcano Grill to a propane burner. Note the diagram below of visit their website for more details and purchase information.
As you can see from the image above a dutch oven can be inserted onto a special base in the Volcano Grill. You place briquets below the dutch oven on the platfrom and an additional amount on the closed lid. Everything is then covered with the Volcano Lid which makes quick work resulting in freshly backed bisquits.
